A 44-year-old woman died after being struck by a bullet from an alleged burglar in Fayette County on Friday.
According to police, two women returning from errands interrupted a burglary at their home on Bohannon Road in Tyrone. The burglar suspects ran out of the back door and into their car, police said. As the car pulled away, a shot was fired in the direction of the house, hitting the 44-year-old woman.
The woman died at the home, according to authorities.
"This just makes me sick. You hate burglars to begin with – people who come into somebody's house and steal, give no respect at all to the privacy of their home. But then, to shoot and kill them – it's infuriating. I hope and pray that we can catch who did this," said Fayette County District Attorney Scott Ballard.
The woman lived at the home with her 78-year-old grandmother, according to a family friend. The grandmother had raised the woman since she was born, family friends said.
Investigators believe multiple men were involved in the crime. The 78-year-old woman could tell them very little about the men or their getaway car.
Fayette County Sheriff's Office investigator Brent Rowan said that authorities did not have a good description of the suspects. He said a silver passenger car – maybe a 4-door passenger car – was possibly involved.
The family friend said that the murdered woman was a devoted member of a nearby Baptist church.
"She was a good Christian girl. She had went to church, I think, something like 43, 44 years without missing a Sunday," said the man.
Anyone with information on the crime is urged to contact the Fayette County Sheriff's Office at 770-716-4750.
