Rhode Island police charge man in Samurai sword attack

Posted: Updated:
JOHNSTON, R.I. -

Rhode Island police have charged a 24-year-old man with slicing another man's arm during a Samurai sword attack.

Johnston police told WPRI-TV that they arrested Michael Gomes on a felony assault charge Thursday night and detained him on $20,000 bail. He's set to appear in court Friday.

Police say Gomes attacked 24-year-old David Teague with a Japanese katana Sword during a fight outside a home on Angell Street early Saturday morning. The sword severed tendons and nerves in Teague's left arm.

Teague suggested the attack was a hate crime because he's bisexual and his attacker yelled a slur about homosexuality. But authorities say there's no evidence of a hate crime.

It's not clear if Gomes has a lawyer. Three other people were arrested in the incident.
