Unsolved Triple Murder Case in Pinyon Pines Getting Attention

Posted: Updated:

A cold case is getting a lot of attention, thanks to a group of private investigators. They are announcing a $100,000 reward for any information leading to the arrest of people who murdered a family then set them on fire.

The murders happened six years ago in a remote area of Riverside near Palm Desert called Pinyon Pines. When police and Riverside sheriff's deputies were making little headway, family members brought in the private investigators.  They have now created a video re-enactment to show how they believe the victims were murdered.

Private Investigator Luis Bolanos said, "We have taken on this investigation because we believe this is our community and we honestly believe that this case can be solved."

This is certainly not how most murder cases are handled. We asked questions, but they weren't answering.

Private investigators say 18-year-old Rebecca Friedli came home to find her mom Vicki and stepdad Jon Hayward dead in the living room, with the killers still inside the house.  Evidence indicates Rebecca ran out, but in the remote area of Pinyon Pines, there was no one to help. She was caught, shot, placed on a wheelbarrow and set on fire.  The murderers then set the house ablaze.

The triple murder of the family happened on September 17, 2006. Police never found a motive and never arrested anyone. The family of the victims worried this case would never be solved, so they turned to private investigators.

The team consists of 10 retired cops from different agencies. Over the last few months, they have interviewed relatives and looked over possible motives. They believe the murders were pre-meditated. They think the killers were known to the victims, lived locally at the time, and may still have strong ties to the Coachella Valley.

Investigators have some leads and they will be looking at several people who at the time of the murders flat out refused to take a polygraph test.
