Teen battling cancer meets baseball hero Al Kaline

Posted: Updated:

They're separated by 60 years, but on Monday night Al Kaline and Collin Trask came together as a 17-year-old boy fighting cancer got to meet one of his baseball heroes.

"It was kind of just awe," said Trask.  "You always hear about him, and to finally be able to see him, get to shake his hand and talk to him was really fun."

in 2007, Collin was diagnosed with medulloblastoma, a brain tumor, but on Monday night with his favorite player's name across his back and he was a guest of the Tigers for a special night he'll never forget.

"It's just wonderful to be able to do the things I want," Trask said.

The good days have been few and far between for the Trasks since Collin's diagnosis in 2007, but they have been lifted by hundreds of families and students from Birmingham Seaholm High School, as well as a teacher, who have raised more than $17,000 to help get him to Duke.

"With this last recurrence, they've run out of treatments here, and that's why we're going to Duke," his mother explained.

Over the next six months, Collin and his mom will make several trips down to Duke University for a special treatment program, but it's days like these that help him feel more like a normal kid.

"I love coming and seeing the baseball," said Trask.
