WASHINGTON -

15-year-old Katie Ledecky, a sophomore at the Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart in Bethesda, Md., returned to the United States on Monday to a group of screaming classmates and friends.

At Dulles International Airport with her mother, Mary Gen, Ledecky said she was excited to win the 800-meter freestyle and to beat the 23-year-old record held by Janet Evans.

Ledecky came in at 8 minutes, 15.63 seconds Friday night, defeating defending Olympic champion Rebecca Adlington of Great Britain, who got the bronze, and Spain's Mireia Belmonte Garcia, who took the silver.

Ledecky's mother says her daughter is already planning to train for another Olympics.
