Health concerns at an old Ford factory in Shelby Township. A chemical known to cause cancer was recently found on the property.

Fox 2 talked to an environmental expert hired by Shelby Township. The township is asking Ford Motor Co. to clean up what lies around and underneath the old Ford Visteon plant in the area of 24 Mile and Mound. It's now owned by Indiana Metal, LLC. TCE, a known cancer-causing chemical and TCA, which can cause health problems, have been found on and under the old factory. But, how far have the chemicals traveled and are they a threat to neighbors? No one is sure for now.
"There are possibly as many as 200 or more individual points where chemicals could have been released at the former Ford Visteon facility," said Dr. James Dragun. "Remember, it's a big facility. It's 200 acres in size."
Ford says, "We are in the process of gathering environmental data to determine what actions, if any, need to be taken at the site and we have met with the Michigan Dept. of Environmental Quality and local residents to keep them apprised of our activities. We have not seen any data to support that anything is leaving the former plant site and moving into the neighboring community. Ford remains committed to doing what is right for the community and the environment."
