Voters in Georgia will decide on the controversial Transportation Sales Tax Referendum on Tuesday. For months, supporters and opponents have spent a lot of time and money trying to sway voters.
If passed, the referendum will fund many transportation projects.
One of the most talked about projects is the Atlanta Beltline, which is a series of parks, trails and mass transit lines. It would link to a 2.7 mile long street car line connecting it to MARTA and neighborhoods. Gwinnett County would get $800 million for improvements and road construction. A project to extend Sugarloaf Parkway would get $296 million.
DeKalb County would get $700 million to expand MARTA through the Clifton Road corridor.
Cobb County express buses would run down a lane on Interstate 75, bringing commuters directly to downtown and midtown Atlanta. That would cost $690 million.
Governor Nathan Deal and Atlanta's Mayor Kasim Reed, who both support the referendum, will be holding a news conference at 10:30 a.m. at the State Capitol. Some opponents of the referendum will be holding a rally at Thankful Missionary Baptist Church in Decatur Monday evening.
Regardless of which side of the issue anyone is on, all can agree that Tuesday's vote will have a big impact on the future of transportation in metro Atlanta.
