Meth Lab Found In Center City Hotel

Posted: Updated:

Over 300 people were forced from their hotel, when police found a mobile meth lab in one of the rooms.

Fire alarms went off at the Hampton Inn at 13th and Race around 5:30 Saturday morning. When fire crews arrived they found a hotel room on the 3rd floor full of chemicals. Their first thought was that a bomb was being made in the room.  After hazmat crews investigated, they discovered it was a mobile meth lab.

366 guests were evacuated from the building while police checked out the scene.

Lye and Acetone were found in gallon buckets in the hotel.  Deputy Fire Chief, Derrick Sawyer tells Fox29, if these two chemicals were mixed incorrectly, they could have caused an explosion.

After waiting outside for hours, most guests were finally allowed back in around 9:30am. People staying on the 3rd floor of the hotel are staying at the Philadelphia Convention Center until the room is cleaned up.

Police say they have a person in for questioning, but so far no charges are being filed.
