BUXTON, N.C. -

Authorities say a pregnant woman from Washington, D.C., has died after being pulled from the water near Buxton.

The Virginian-Pilot of Norfolk reports that 31-year-old Jill Chenet was pronounced dead after being taken by helicopter to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in Virginia.

Her husband, 37-year-old Matthew Chenet, was also pulled from the water by rescue workers and was hospitalized.

National Park Service spokeswoman Cyndy Holda said rescue workers discovered the couple floating face down about 20 yards from shore Wednesday. Holda said onlookers were attempting to go in after the couple.

Holda said when rescue workers brought Jill Chenet to shore, she was not breathing and had no pulse. She said Matthew Chenet was having difficulty breathing when rescue workers brought him to shore.

Jill Chenet was a second grade teacher at The River School in Northwest D.C.

The school says there will be a service for Chenet on Monday, July 30, at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Nazareth Catholic Church in Roanoke, Va. The school has also established a scholarship fund in honor of Chenet.
