Officials discuss 9-1-1 failures during derecho

Posted: Updated:
FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. -

An investigation is underway into why 9-1-1 service was disrupted in parts of northern Virginia following June's derecho. Officials from Virginia, Maryland and the District gathered in Fairfax Tuesday for a closed door meeting.

The investigation was prompted by a request from Fairfax County Chairwoman Sharon Bulova who says her residents could not call 9-1-1 in the days after the storm.

It turns out; Fairfax County wasn't the only place that saw 9-1-1 outages. Prince William and Arlington did as well.

The question is what happened, and how to prevent it from happening again.

Verizon officials took part in the Council of Governments meeting today out at Fairfax County where all sides briefed each other about what went right and a lot of what went wrong.

Officials tell us they want answers in days, not weeks, because as we all know another storm can hit just as quickly as the last one.
