Train strikes, kills woman on tracks in north NJ

Posted: Updated:

FAIR LAWN, N.J. (AP) - New Jersey Transit officials say a woman was struck and killed by a train in northern New Jersey.

The accident occurred around 9:10 a.m. Tuesday in Fair Lawn. Authorities were trying to identify the woman and determine how and why she was on the tacks.

Witnesses said the engineer sounded the train's horn, but could not stop the train in time. They also said the woman did not try to move out of the train's path.

Officials say there were roughly 200 people aboard the Hoboken-bound train, but none of them were injured in the accident.

The accident caused delays ranging from 30 to 60 minutes on the Bergen line Tuesday morning, but most delays soon eased.
