Md. Public Service Commission rejects most of Pepco rate increase request

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -

Maryland regulators have largely rejected Pepco's request for a 4 percent rate increase.

The Public Service Commission on Friday rejected $50 million of the $68 million increase requested by the company.

The commission says it disallowed almost $8 million in expenses caused by Pepco's past failures to maintain a reliable electric system.

The commission did approve an $18.1 million rate increase, which the panel describes as required to meet the legal and statutory mandates set by law to provide safe and reliable service.

Pepco, which serves Washington and suburban Maryland, has come under heavy criticism for prolonged delays in restoring power after severe storms, most recently after a strong storm hit Maryland late last month.
