WASHINGTON -

Police in the District of Columbia and elsewhere in the region say they're stepping up security around movie theaters after a Colorado shooting that left 12 dead and injured 59 others.

Officials say they have no threats targeting the region but are taking extra precautions to avoid any copycat shootings. A gunman in Aurora, Colo., opened fire during a midnight showing of the new Batman film, "The Dark Knight Rises."

Assistant D.C. Police Chief Lamar Greene said Friday that moviegoers could expect to see more police patrols around theaters through at least the weekend. He said officers would pay close attention to theaters showing "The Dark Knight Rises."

Police departments in Baltimore and Baltimore County say they're taking similar precautions.
