Pepco on hot seat for performance during derecho

ROCKVILLE, Md. -

The Montgomery County Council grilled top Pepco officials during a public hearing Thursday in Rockville about what was called the utility's "unreliability." Council President Roger Berliner wanted to know how they managed their crews and whether they restored power as quickly as other utilities, like Dominion Power, across the river.

In defense of the utility, Pepco President Thomas Graham told the members his people did the best they could, considering the derecho was a big storm that was not predicted. He said there were 4.3 million customers, and the storm was felt over 700 miles by 10 states.

Council member Hans Riemer said, "It's fine to talk about under grounding, hiring more linemen and improving communications," but he said the real problem is "Pepco, the values of the company. It's the management of the company."

Some angry customers, like Toby Levin from Rockville, accused Pepco of reporting restorations when they weren't, reporting they were not aware of outages that had been reported. And reporting there were crews, when they weren't crews.

Meanwhile, Congressman Chris Van Hollen is urging state utility regulators to reject the 4 per cent rate hike Pepco has requested.
