Residents begging for repairs at Detroit apartment

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) -

Tenants trapped in a Detroit apartment building say their pleas for help are going unanswered.

We first brought you this story in May. Alden Park Towers had several elevators out of service, including one at an eight floor high-rise. Months later, some of the elevators have been fixed but the one inside the high-rise is still out of service.

The building is filled with senior citizens and people bound to wheelchairs. They're forced to walk flights of stories with groceries in hand. And then, there's the issue of safety. It's extremely difficult for EMS to get to people who are having medical issues without access to an elevator.

The fire department tells us it is not a code violation to have a non-working elevator, as long as the stairwells are free of debris.

We have been calling management at Alden Park since May. No one has returned our calls, but you can be sure we will be staying on top of this one.
