Hollywood moms make childbirth look so easy, but what about for the rest of us?
Losing weight, whether you've had a baby or not, can be a complicated challenge, and it can take nine months.
Losing the baby weight really starts with gaining the right amount of weight. Providence OBGYN Robert Welch says we no longer need to be eating for two.
Back in '40, '50 and '60 we were more concerned about nutrition and gaining weight, now we're worried about gaining too much weight," said Welch.
General guidelines for weight gain in pregnant women:
Underweight: 28-40 pounds
Normal weight: 25-35 pounds
Overweight: 15-25 pounds
Obese: 11-20 pounds
The baby will weigh about eight pounds, with fluids and fat storage accounting for about 20 more.
As for the hot moms in Hollywood, Dr. Youn's advises not to turn to them for realistic inspiration. "It's unrealistic to expect ordinary people to lose weight," he said. "For celebrities, looking good is their only job so they have a lot of time and money to do this where you or I don't."
"Celebrities never admit when they've had plastic surgery but its very common for them to have 'lipo' or tummy tucks or other procedures that make it look like they've lost the weight on their own," said Youn.
When you're eating for two and you feel hungry all the time, stick to nutrient-dense foods that are high in fiber and protein and will fill you up while not adding on the extra pounds.
Dr. Welch also says to look at the scale. "It's amazing to me only 25 percent of patients own scales at home to weigh themselves on a regular basis, he said. " That's a critical tool to determine what you're doing."
