Extreme heat may slow speed of Metro trains

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON -

Metro riders might experience delays Wednesday as the extreme heat may call for speed restrictions to be put into place.

Track inspectors using infrared thermal guns will be out measuring rail temperatures.

If inspectors detect rail temperature higher than 135 degrees on a section of rail, a slow order will be placed into effect for that line. Train may slow trains to 35 mph in some sections if this order is given.

Earlier this month a heat kink near the West Hyattsville Metro station caused a Green Line train to derail.

Metro says the speed restrictions are intended to improve a train's ability to stop in the event that another heat kink develops on the rails.

Metro customers will be permitted to carry and drink water on the system on Wednesday because of the extreme temperatures.
