Women's roller derby is on the rise

Posted: Updated:
SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -

Women's roller derby is being called one of the fastest growing sports in the nation. So far more than 1,200 amateur teams exist in the world, and nearly 30 of them are located in Michigan.

What some people may not realize is the intensity of the sport. Roller derby is the only full contact sport where teams play offense and defense at the same time.

"It takes a lot of sweat, a lot of tears and a lot of practice to pull it off."

Some see it as a fun way to workout, and others see it as a way to take out frustration. Either way it's a team sport that brings people together.

"If it wasn't for roller derby I wouldn't know any of these women... You get one big family full of people you never dreamed you could be friends with."

While some people may picture the roller derby of the past, these days the sport has become so popular that it's one of the 8 sports under consideration for the 2020 Olympic games.

"I think a lot of people are still in the mentality of the 70's roller derby where it was staged like wrestling where girls are pulling each other's hair out. It's not at all the sport it is today, it's a legitimate sport.

Even more recognition is coming to the sport, thanks to blockbusters like Whip It and documentaries like Derby Baby, which will be shown in Royal Oak Thursday, July 19.
