LAUREL, Md. -

Brent Debnam is 22 years old. He has cerebral palsy and osteoporosis. He will tell you in a heartbeat, he does not see himself as having a disability. He says he sees himself as a regular person with slight limitations.

Debnam and his mother, Laverne, have made do in their small, one-story house. But he spends a lot of time bumping into walls with his motorized wheelchair. It is hard to maneuver around to get into the kitchen or to use the bathroom.

He has been sleeping in his wheelchair because it is too difficult for his mother to lift him into bed. In fact, she has strained her back doing just that.

Friends at the Bethany Community Church have embraced their family, holding a fundraiser on Monday. They are hoping to raise $150,000 to help build an addition to the Debnam home to make it more wheelchair accessible.
