Artist Removes Halo From Paterno at Penn State Mural

Posted: Updated:

Artist Michael Pilato has once again altered his famous mural that sits at Heister street and College Avenue at Penn State.

Because of the recent report from former FBI Director Louis Freeh that showed missteps by former football coach Joe Paterno, Pilato painted over the halo that hung above "Joe Pa's" head.  Instead he painted a blue ribbon on the late coach's chest, a symbol of support of victims of child abuse, a cause supported by Paterno. The artist originally painted the halo following Paterno's death last January.

The Freeh report showed Paterno, former university president Graham Spanier, former vice-president Gary Schultz, and former athletic director Tim Curley failed to stop Jerry Sandusky from sexually abusing children.

Sandusky was once part of the mural.  His image was painted over following his arrest and has been replaced with activist poet Dora McQuaid.  The mural titled "Inspiration" contains images of several notable Penn State figures throughout the school's history.
