Saving your summer garden after a heat wave

No gardener wants to walk into their garden only to discover that all of their plants have withered and died from exposure.

Maybe the Perennials took a beating and need a trimming. Perhaps the shrubs are looking a bit lackluster with yellowing leaves. Do the roses now need to be pruned or replaced?

It's been a historically hot first half to 2012 and many plants were at risk from the consistently high temperatures.
