D.C. Water has some advice for residents of the flood-prone D.C. neighborhood called Bloomingdale: retrofit your plumbing to keep sewage from flowing into basements.
On Tuesday, a sudden evening thunderstorm unleashed a torrent of water into the low-lying streets around Rhode Island Avenue and First Street, NW. Home video shows the water about two feet deep in the street. Some cars floated onto sidewalks.
Water not only poured into basement doorways, it also came up through toilet bowls and bathtub drains.
"We had to take towels (cause we just couldn't find anything else) and just put all our full body weight -- it was four of us -- on each one of the 'exits', so to speak," explained Bloomingdale resident Chris Rodousakis. "And we were able to slow the water down, but, you know, when you're sitting in sewage for periods of like 20-30 minutes, it's you know just a nauseating feeling."
D.C. Water, which operates both the city's water system and the city's sewer system, has advice for residents in low-lying neighborhoods. Spokesman Alan Heyman told us: "We recommend calling a licensed plumber and installing something called a 'backflow preventer.' And this is something you can trigger during a storm that keeps the water out. So, it will stay in the street, instead of coming in thru that bathtub or that shower."
DC Water is also building a 2.6 billion dollar storm water storage project, which should allow the city's sewage system to better handle sudden downpours. But that solution will not be finished for about 20 years.
