Fairfax County's Sharon Bulova asks MWCOG to investigate 911 outage

Posted: Updated:
FAIRFAX, Va. -

Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Chairman Sharon Bulova is seeking a regional investigation of why 911 service was disrupted in northern Virginia for several days following the massive storm that hit the region June 29.

Bulova will ask the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments to head up an investigation at the council's meeting Wednesday.

Verizon operates the 911 network in the region, and Bulova and others have faulted Verizon for failing to communicate about the problems that led 911 service to go down for several days after the storm, as widespread power outages crippled the region.

The proposed task force would look at what caused the outage, why backup systems failed at Verizon's main 911 regional facility in Arlington, and what can Verizon do to prevent future outages.
