WASHINGTON -
Heavy rains have caused flooding and power outages in D.C. Tuesday night.
Video sent in from Rhode Island Avenue and 1st Street in Northwest D.C. showed many cars getting stuck in the rain and having to turn around due to the high water on the road.
Homes in the area have lost power as well. More than 3,000 Pepco customers have been affected in D.C.
A FOX 5 viewer also sent in a picture that shows flooding in an alley behind Dunbar High School on P Street.
A number of homes were affected by the flood waters. Rich Dizzino's basement apartment got wet again, with raw sewage coming up out of his toilet during the worst of Tuesday's night weather.
"It's been pretty devastating for the residents I've spoke to," said Ward 5 D.C. Councilmember Kenyan McDuffie. "I've been inside a couple of basements and you've got folks who are completely flooded."
McDuffie came out here to see for himself the effects of the flash flooding along Rhode Island Avenue.
"We've got some really long standing sewer and drainage issues that we need to deal with down in the Bloomingdale neighborhood," said McDuffie. "And the infrastructure improvements to this area and to the storm water system couldn't happen soon enough."
D.C. says other locations that have suffered flooding and causing roads to be blocked were at the 500 block of Rhode Island Avenue in Northeast and the 700 block of E Street in Northwest.
