A Spirit Airlines flight made an emergency landing in Houston early this morning after the airline says the flight was diverted because of a disruptive passenger.
The plane left Los Angeles last night and was supposed to land in Fort Lauderdale this morning.....instead the plane landed here in Houston....where passengers say they were left stranded for about 12 hours.
After being stranded in Houston for 12 hours...these passengers have finally made it to Fort Lauderdale...but they say Spirit Airlines robbed them of their good spirits.
Spirit Airlines flight NK-310 left Los Angeles Saturday night around 10:20.....scheduled to land in Fort Lauderdale Sunday morning around 6....but that never happened.
"It started around 10 in the evening we were 30 minutes late from LA to Fort Lauderdale and around 2 something in the morning and says we have to do an emergency landing due to a passenger and we have to veer to Houston so we did that. They took the guy off the plane and we stayed in our seats for another 1hr 45 minutes with nothing to eat or drink. We stayed an additional 25 minutes, the captain came out and said due to FAA regulations the plane cannot fly and we have to evacuate," said passenger Teresa Chaviano.
Passenger Teresa Chaviano was on that red-eye flight....and talked to me on her cell phone earlier this afternoon while she was trapped in Intercontinental's Terminal D with over a hundred other stranded passengers.
Now off the plane in Florida, she told reporters Spirit originally wanted to bus them up to Dallas.....a nearly 5-hour drive.
Earlier today, Teresa told me not only did the airline poorly handle their customers.....but they handled the unruly passenger in a very unprofessional way.
"He was a blind 89-year-old with Alzheimer's and by accident he touched his next door passenger and she went out of control and apparently was under the influence of alcohol," said Teresa.
KK:What would you like to say to Spirit Airlines right now?
Teresa:"Close their doors, this is not customer service, not humanity we pay to be treated like human beings."
KK:Let me ask you, will you ever fly Spirit Airlines again?
This headache comes just days after Spirit announced they would be offering non-stop low fare service between Houston and Dallas starting in September.
In an email to Fox 26, a spokeswoman for Spirit Airlines says "We understand that this has been an inconvenience for our customers, but the safety of our customers is always top priority. All customers are being given full refunds for this inconvenience."
After a 20-hour day.....they finally left Houston around 3:15 this afternoon....and arrived safely in Fort Lauderdale around 8:30 EST.
