Smithsonian Folklife Festival to honor Chuck Brown

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON -

The Smithsonian Folklife Festival is adding a daylong tribute to the "godfather of go-go" music, Chuck Brown, to its schedule for the weekend on the National Mall.

Organizers are designating Saturday as "Chuck Brown Tribute Day" at the festival's program celebrating the arts and culture of black neighborhoods in Washington. The tributes will run from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Brown died in May at age 75.

The tributes include musical performances, an hour-long fitness workout to the sounds of go-go, and storytelling on the history of go-go and Brown's music career. At least three bands will perform, including Cold Hearted Band, No Question Band and Junkyard Band.

The festival is free and continues through Sunday. It's held outdoors between 7th and 14th streets on the National Mall.
