WASHINGTON -
When the storms hit DC, Victor Alcalde didn't lose his power or air conditioning, but he almost lost something more precious. His daughter Carolina was riding her motorcycle home near Meriden Hill Park. But as the storm struck, she was critically injured after being hit by a falling tree.
Victor says he will never forget the 3 a.m. call her received from a doctor saying "Your daughter has been in an accident, I have bad news for you, and that made it even worse." Later that morning, she says he finally heard her voice. Victor says "I was able to talk to her, she was looking to speak to me so I knew she was alive and she was talking that she was knocked down."
Carolina is in intensive care at GW Hospital. Victor says his daughter is paralyzed from the waist down with a severed spinal cord, five broken ribs, a fractured shoulder blade and trauma to her lungs. In response the accident, Carolina's friends have bonded together in person and online. Together those friends helped form "Camp Caro" on Facebook and CampCaro.com to keep Carolina's friends updated on her condition.
Victoria says, "For a lot of people she's their rock, so now it's about being her rock." An online fundraiser is under way on wepay.com to help with what Victoria says are expected to be astronomical health care costs.
"They estimate that the first year costs for someone with this kind of injury are $250 thousand dollars and $770 thousand dollars."
Carolina's father Victor says the most important thing right now is that he still has his daughter, adding "We know that she will fight for her recovery, we know that." So while the storm destroyed many things, it didn't come close to destroying the love that has made Carolina Alcalde's life so central, to the lives of so many others.
