Occupy Wall Street, Philly Pops Both On Independence Mall

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

Two very different events collide here on the beginning of the 4th of July holiday.

The national gathering of Occupy Wall Street is in its third day, with the center of its protest against corporate greed and many other causes on Independence Mall.

But on the other side, the stage was set Tuesday night for the Philly Pops.

FOX 29's Chris O'Connell reported live Tuesday night near Independence Mall, where occupy protestors were setting up for the night.

Occupy protestors took to the streets again Tuesday. Their latest march in particular was against coal mining in Appalachia.

About 45 protestors were escorted by police as they marched down Market Street. But it caused sporadic traffic tie ups.

This Occupy event is much smaller than what we've covered in months past mainly because there are no tent encampments this time.

But come 8 p.m., these occupiers may come face to face with some of the 1-percent they say are the root of this country's problems – at the free concert on the mall.

Extra National Park police have been brought in. And, through late Tuesday afternoon, things have been peaceful, O'Connell reported.

Just how many Occupy protestors are in town is not clear. Some say the number is up to 1,000 or more.

What the group hopes to accomplish while here is to come up with platform of ideas and grievances they plan to bring to presidential and congressional candidates for the upcoming election, O'Connell reported.
