WASHINGTON -

Satellite pictures show large areas of darkness on 30 June after the ‘derecho' had moved through the mid-Atlantic.

The strong surface winds of the storm downed a large number of trees and powerlines and caused widespread power outages.

Millions of people lost power after the storm and some are still without.

Officials fear the death toll, already at 22, could climb because of the heat and widespread use of generators.
