911 service mostly working again after storm

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON -

Verizon says 911 service has been mostly restored in northern Virginia after being knocked out by Friday night's storm.

The storm known as a derecho knocked out power to a Verizon facility in Arlington that resulted in 911 calls not working in Arlington, Fairfax and Prince William counties and the city of Manassas.

Limited 911 service was restored in Fairfax late Saturday, but County Board of Supervisors Chairman Sharon Bulova says the 911 system was still not fully functional Monday afternoon. She says she plans to appoint a regional task force to find out what went wrong and how to avoid it in the future.

Prince William County spokesman Jason Grant says 911 calls in the county started going through again on Monday morning after not working for two days.
