DC residents still struggling with power outages, downed trees

WASHINGTON -

From his porch on Macomb Street in Northwest D.C., Charles Fishman can catch a glimpse of the National Cathedral, but no amount of praying would have helped Friday night.

"It was just instantaneous. There was no warning at all," says Fishman.

He heard "a loud crack" when a huge tree snapped. It pulled down wires and bent poles. Now, Fishman is watching the repairs from that front porch.

"I've got a great view. This is the only show I got,"' he laughs. "It's in HD, 3D, you name it."

Some people are still wishing there was some work to watch where they live. At Skyland Apartments in Southeast D.C., there is a tree on a building and a pole practically in the street.

"I've been calling Pepco, calling Pepco. I'm getting the same runaround. We're on our way or ‘It's not in the system,"' says Bernadette Peyton-Bey.

At a press conference Monday, D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray says Pepco has slashed the number customers without power.

"While I want to thank them for their progress, they need to move faster," says Mayor Gray. "Pepco's pace of restoring power to me is unacceptable. And the speed of their response is disappointing. How many times have we been through this before?"

Gray says there are at least 1,300 trees down. He said on Monday that there are 65 traffic lights in the District malfunctioning due to lack of power. 50 of them are operating on city generators or being staffed by District Department of Transportation traffic controllers.
