Generators should be used in well-ventilated locations outside away from all doors, windows and vent openings. The generator should be placed as far away as possible and at a minimum at least 3 feet away from your house.

An investigation is underway into why 9-1-1 service was disrupted in parts of northern Virginia following June's derecho. Officials from Virginia, Maryland and the District gathered in Fairfax Tuesday.

WASHINGTON -
Officials are urging motorists to use caution Monday as many traffic intersections in Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia remain dark after the storm.
Power utility crews are working to ensure major roads are open as quickly as possible, however some ay remain dark through rush-hour.
Traffic officers and stop signs have been deployed to intersections where signals are out and will remain onsite until power is restored.
Police advise to:
-Treat dark intersections as four-way stops.
-Proceed with caution ONLY when traffic permits.
-Enter intersections only when it is safe to do so, using turn signals to let other motorists know your intentions.
