Structurally-Deficient Bridge Finally Closed

Posted: Updated:

"They should've been done it. It's dangerous," says Tammy Hudson when she saw Darby Borough officials closed the Pine Street Bridge in her neighborhood.

Residents noticed a closed sign and roadblocks at both ends of the bridge Friday afternoon.

Resident Mark Dyer says, "I don't know why they kept it open this long."

Fox 29 reported on the bridge in January. Back then the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation said it was structurally deficient and needed repairs. The bridge has existed since before the Civil War.

"The most they've done is come out and patch it up here and there," says Dyer.

CSX owns the bridge and is responsible for the structure. Darby Borough's job is to maintain the pedestrian walkways and blacktop. Borough Manager Mark Possenti says they've kept it up the best they can but their efforts are futile.

Possenti says, "The deck which is underneath the black top is just continuously getting worse and worse."

PennDot officials tell Fox 29 they've been doing regular inspections. The last inspection was Sunday. CSX is supposed to start repairs in August. But PennDot says Sunday's inspection showed a corroded steel beam and wooden beams visible beneath the surface causing shifting. That's scary to residents who say they've seen it happen.

" You can feel if a car comes over fast enough and puts enough weight on the bridge it moves absolutely," said Dyer.

FOX 29 called CXS for comment but have not heard back from them. Borough officials say they're waiting to hear from officials in Harrisburg whether the bridge will be repaired or replaced. It's closed indefinitely.
