DETROIT (WJBK) -
The Supreme Court handed President Obama a big win, but how will this impact who wins come November?
"This is something that as Americans we should support -- health care for all," said Maureen Taylor of the Michigan Welfare Rights Organization.
She is grateful for the Supreme Court's ruling calling it a victory for all Americans. It's certainly being hailed as a huge victory for President Barack Obama, but will it translate into victory for him or Mitt Romney come November?
"What this really does is it raises the stakes in November because on November 6 there will be a referendum on the Supreme Court decision of today," said Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette.
He was one of those who sued challenging the individual mandate in the president's plan. He's deeply disappointed in the court's ruling and says ObamaCare will cost the country dearly.
"The estimates by the Congressional Budget Office right now are $670-billion in new taxes imposed on people, the economy, families because of this ObamaCare legislation," Schuette said.
However, state Representative David Nathan has a completely different opinion. We caught up with him out cleaning up a neighborhood with volunteers from a group called Rippling Hope. These are young people able to stay on their parents' health insurance plans until the age of 26 thanks to ObamaCare.
The federal government says thousands of Michigan seniors and people with disabilities are already saving money and getting better care. Small businesses are getting tax credits for offering health insurance to their employees and health centers are expanding access.
Nathan believes that's the referendum voters will be acting on.
"Every American deserves to have health care insurance. Every American needs to have affordable health care insurance, and this is just something that we really need to be proud of because our president, President Barack Obama, put his neck out to make sure that this happened," Nathan said.
