Boy slammed SUV into telephone pole, Detroit Police say - DC Breaking Local News Weather Sports FOX 5 WTTG

"Once I heard his voice, I said, oh my god, this is a child," said Courtney Morrison.

A child was trapped in a wrecked SUV and he wasn't on the passenger side.

"The pole ... came straight through the driver's seat.  His legs were wrapped around that seat and he had his seat belt on," Morrison said.

She heard tires screeching early Wednesday morning and then came the crash.

Detroit Police say the eleven-year-old took his mother's car and drove it at least a couple of miles at a very high rate of speed before he lost control slamming into a telephone pole.  

Morrison rushed over to help.

"I asked him his name and I said, 'How old are you?'  He said, 'I'm eleven years old.  My name's Nathan.'  And I said, 'Oh my god, what's your mother's name?  What's your phone number?'"

Morrison said she could see he was terrified.

"He said, 'I've been a bad boy.  I stole my mother's car.'  I said, 'Don't you worry.'  He said, 'I'm going to be in so much trouble.'  I said, 'Don't you worry.  Your mother is going to be glad that your alive.'"

Neighbors called his mother and gave her a ride to the scene.  Crews used the jaws of life to get him out of the car.  The pole narrowly missed his body.

"If he had been adult sized, no, he wouldn't have lived.  I don't think he would've made it," Morrison said. "I'm just glad he's all right.  I'm really glad he's all right."

We've been told the young man is expected to be fine.  Meanwhile, we've not heard anything about whether there will be criminal charges.
