Do not track button may offer internet privacy protection

ATLANTA -

Nearly every site a person visits on the internet is logged by advertisers who want to know more about you. They want to know what you buy, what you like, and where you browse so that they can direct some of the $60 billion worth of internet ads directly to you.

Some people love the ads. They like it when advertisers target them for special offers. Others hate it, thinking it's an invasion of privacy.

So what's the compromise? It's a do not track button. To get it, go to donottrackplus.com to download the free program and install it in each browser you may be using. When you click the button, you will see a list of advertisers that have been blocked. You have the option to unblock an advertiser if you don't mind being tracked by them.

You might think the private browsing option already on most computers will protect you.  FOX 5 tech expert Richard Warner says no.

"The problem is these don't work. You thought they did but there are ways around it. For the most part the industry is not adhering to this. It's basically ignoring it," said Warner.

If you really want to block advertisers he says right now your only option is the Do Not Track Plus download. He adds that in the next year web browsers will have a do not track option included, but you'll have to go to the browser settings and set it up yourself.
