Officials at the National Weather Service continue to believe the causes of Friday night's storm damage in Northwest D.C. and in nearby parts of Prince George's County were downward "micro-bursts" from the storm cell. Radar did not register a rotational pattern in the storms. Rotation could indicate the presence of a tornado.
The Bladenwoods condo complex in Bladensburg, Md. bore the brunt of the storm damage. High winds peeled the roofs off several of the buildings in the complex, and, in come cases, knocked down the walls holding up the roofs. Large chunks of the roof wound up more than 300 feet from the buildings, crushing an unoccupied car.
Resident Kenny Young said it appeared to him that the winds were blowing in excess of 100 miles an hour. "The hail was coming down so bad," explained Young, "that I asked my wife and my daughter to move... into the back room.... I thought the window was going to burst in on us."
Authorities in Prince George's County report only two relatively minor injuries occurred during the storm.
Dozens of families have had to leave the Bladenwoods complex because of the damage. Some are being housed temporarily at a shelter at Bladensburg High School.
Damage in Northwest D.C. appeared to be lighter, but the winds were strong enough to knock down a big tree onto a full-sized taxicab, which was parked on 7th Street near Missouri Avenue.
Tens of thousands of electrical customers lost power at the height of the storm and for some time afterward.
