Friday night's winds resulted in damage to 15 multi-family dwellings and a single family home as well as structural damage.
Authorities say the damage is the result of a so-called "microburst," a small intense downdraft that is capable of producing winds of more than 100 miles per hour. Authorities say the microburst happened just after 8 p.m. and that aside from damage to buildings only a few minor injuries were reported.
A temporary shelter for residents whose homes were affected was established at Rodgers Heights Elementary School, but on Saturday afternoon residents were expected to be moved to Bladensburg High School.
Residents looking for information can call the Emergency Operation Center Hotline at 301-583-2230.
