Ways to beat the heat as the temperature rises

As the temperature in Michigan continues to climb, people are finding creative ways to beat the heat.

Although it might be the best idea to stay inside to ward off the heat, some people have no choice but to be out in the scorching sunlight.

"It's humid, and just being in the sun you can feel the sun beating down on you, and all you want to do is grab water and jump in a pool," said Erica Sell, a college student training to be a camp counselor at Lake St. Clair Metropark.

Frank Piso has the job of making sure none of the counselors-in-training are stricken with heat illness. "The number one thing is lots of breaks and hydration. Drink, drink lots of water. Dumping water on you doesn't really cool you off, it's drinking the water. It's water intake," said Piso.

The heat can be deadly, so if you live in a house that doesn't have air conditioning, you may want to check out one of the many cooling centers that have been set up across metro Detroit.

Experts recommend skipping workouts on these hot days, but if you decide not to, take precautionary measures.

"We fill our water bottles and put on our loose, comfortable cotton clothing and ride as early as we can," said biker Riki Nutting.

David Nutting, also taking on the heat at the Metropark, said, "The trick is to drink plenty of water and put on sunscreen. Get out and have fun."
