WASHINGTON -
As soon as D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray named a veteran public housing official to lead the city's affordable housing efforts, allegations of a scandal at his previous job surfaced.
Gray named Michael Kelly as director of the Department of Housing and Community Development on Monday. Kelly most recently served as executive director of the Philadelphia Housing Authority.
But on the same day of the announcement, numerous media organizations from Philadelphia report Kelly resigned abruptly because of a workplace affair.
Kelly would be returning to the city less than three years after resigning from the D.C. Housing Authority, which he led for nine years. Gray spokesman Pedro Ribeiro says Kelly start day is scheduled for July 2 with a salary of $165,000 a year.
The agency's current director, John Hall, will become a senior advisor to the deputy mayor for planning and economic development.
