Red Foxes Invade Jersey Shore

Posted: Updated:
OCEAN CITY, N.J. -

Red foxes down on the South Jersey Shore?

It's really happening in Cape May County, and an Ocean City man has the pictures to prove it.

"I was surprised," said Ray Zaleski, 75.  "Because you're on an island."

He stumbled across a fox in his backyard a while back and it would become a favorite hangout.  It would feed on the water and peanuts he would put out, so much so he actually named him Peanut.

"I was going to get the bird food out of my shed and he was right behind me so I turned around and handed him a peanut and he took it."

The Humane Society of Ocean City says they have received dozens of calls regarding red foxes like Peanut in recent months.

Zaleski says he was told they make their way across bridges from time to time, and even come across the water in low tide.

He says the Humane Society eventually trapped Peanut to be released in the wilderness.  However he says it's those very same wooded areas that are disappearing due to construction and forest fires, forcing the foxes out and into inhabited areas.
