Cost of taxicab in DC to decrease by $1 this week

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON -

The fuel surcharge on the cost of a taxicab ride in the District of Columbia is set to expire this week.

The D.C. Taxicab Commission says the $1 surcharge will expire at midnight Wednesday. The fee was imposed in March 2011 and has been extended three times since then.

The commission noted that gas prices have been falling and that projections indicate a further slide is likely throughout the summer. Ron Linton, the commission's chairman, says the group will continue to track gas prices through the summer and fall. If conditions change, he says the commission "will consider appropriate action."

The commission says the current average daily price of gas in Washington has declined by 19 cents to $3.66.
