Metro thefts rise, parking lot crime declines

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON -

Metro says thefts in the Washington-area transit system doubled in the first three months of the year compared to the same period last year.

Metro says 239 thefts were reported from January to March. That's up from 119 last year. Transit Police Chief Michael Taborn says the rise in thefts is partially due to more riders using portable devices.

Metro also has been setting traps for criminals by using decoys, and 125 people have been arrested as part of the effort.

Nine of the top 10 high-crime stations are in D.C. One is in Maryland. Anacostia, Benning Road, Rhode Island Avenue and L'Enfant Plaza had the most crimes.

Meanwhile, crime in parking lots has decreased significantly to 63 reported crimes from 120 such crimes in the same period last year.
