ROSEVILLE, Mich. (WJBK) -

7:00 p.m. Tuesday, a thief walks into Gianini's Jewelers in the Rosetown Shopping Center pretending to be a customer.

"Request to see a golden diamond ring, and when they showed him the ring, he grabbed the ring and ran out the front door," said Roseville Police Chief James Berlin.

Just like that gone in a flash along with a $16,500 ring.  Right behind him was the store's owner yelling for him to stop.

"Subject stopped, turned and faced the owner and reached behind his back as if he had a firearm. Unfortunately for him, the owner had his own gun and pulled his gun and started shooting," Berlin explained.

The thief took off towards Gratiot Avenue where a driver was waiting in a getaway car, but in the rush to escape, the driver crashed and the car was found a short distance away.

"They left some belongings behind in the car that also has led to some points of identification, so we are actively looking for two individuals at this time," Berlin said.

One of the suspects involved in the robbery has a long criminal history dating back two decades.  Police believe it's just a matter of time before he is caught for the diamond ring rip off.  The store's owner will not face any charges for shooting at the suspect.

"Gun was legally registered.  He does have a CPL and was legally authorized to have it," said Berlin.

Police also found the suspect's cell phone in the car.  On the phone were pictures of the store. They think these guys had been planning this for awhile.
