A Detroit woman went to the police station saying she feared for her life because of her violent boyfriend. Hours later she was in the hospital after being shot in the head.
The victim's family believes more could have been done.
Chanita Vincent, 42, says she was beaten by her boyfriend early Monday. FOX 2 was told she went to the 2nd Precinct on Grand River Avenue to report the abuse because she was afraid for her life. Sources tell FOX 2 she arrived at the station before the department's "Virtual Precinct" hours, in which offices close at 4 p.m. in order to get more officers on the streets.
But an officer told her there was nothing he could do to help her and directed her to the after-hour phone to file a report instead. Sources say she called and waited for several minutes on hold before she gave up and walked away. "I went up to the police station and went to make the report and (the officer) told me they don't take reports no more so he pointed me to the phone that was over there on the wall," said Vincent. "He did not care. He didn't care that I was choked, scratched up, bruised up."
After that, Vincent went home. Her boyfriend was waiting for her. He opened fire as she pulled in the driveway, sending a bullet through the windshield that struck her in the head.
She survived the wound. Vincent tells FOX 2 she's pregnant and is being monitored closely by doctors.
A police spokesperson confirms that she did go into the 2nd Precinct to make a report, but they do not know what happened after that. Officials plan to review video Tuesday and talk to officers to find out.
