Elderly woman dies after being struck by bicyclist in Arlington

ARLINGTON, Va. -

Arlington County Police say an 80-year-old Arlington woman has died after she was hit by a bicyclist on a trail in Arlington.

The accident happened around 7:11 a.m. Monday on the Four Mile Run Bike Path in the area of the 4900 block of Columbia Pike.

Police say according to the bicyclist and a witness, the 62-year-old bicyclist did yell out to the victim, Ita Lapina, and rung a bell warning that he was coming up behind her. She turned to her left and turned around and was struck head-on.

Police say the woman fell back and hit her head on the pavement, suffering significant head trauma.

The woman was pronounced dead at the hospital at 6:20 p.m.

The bicyclist remained at the scene and received treatment for a minor knee injury.

No charges will be filed against the bicyclist, according to police.
