SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -

From SkyFox, we could see the suspect on the ground in handcuffs.  He was captured by Southfield Police after an officer witnessed the carjacking of an 83-year-old man.  That officer was in the area of 10 Mile and Telegraph when he saw what he thought was a confrontation at a nearby gas station.

"So he kept looking, and then he saw one of the gentleman, the younger gentleman, jump in the Cadillac and take off," said Southfield Police Lieutenant Nick Loussia.

We're told the 26-year-old suspect from Detroit refused to pull over as he headed north on Telegraph with police in hot pursuit.

"The Cadillac refused to stop for the officers. There was a short chase, and at some point our officers used intentional contact to bring the pursuit to an end," Loussia explained.

That's when police say the guy got out and tried to run, but an officer fired a shot to stop him.

Police say at first they thought the suspect was shot twice, but it turns out he has a bullet in him from a previous shooting.  He was shot once in the shoulder and is expected to recover.

We're told the 83-year-old victim is shaken up, but is also expected to be okay.  He has that Southfield officer's sharp eye and keen instincts to thank for the quick arrest.

"He was at the right place at the right time, and he used great observation skills," Loussia said.
