FOX 29 News has confirmed that one of 28 people facing charges after a prostitution sting over the weekend in Atlantic City is a Temple University men's basketball player.
According to police, Khalif Wyatt, 21, of Norristown, Pa., is charged with engaging in prostitution and resisting arrest.
Wyatt is listed on Temple University Sports' website as a 6-foot-4-inch junior out of Norristown High School.
According to Temple's website, Wyatt followed up his Atlantic 10 Conference "Sixth-Man of the Year" title in 2010-2011 by being named Second Team A-10 last year. He was also fourth in the conference in scoring, averaging 17.1 points per game.
Twenty-eight men and women were charged as a result of the two-day undercover operation carried out along Pacific Avenue by police, sheriffs and detectives attached to the FBI Lost Innocence Task Force. Some of the charges were related to drugs.
Police said Wyatt's arrest occurred at Pacific and
Montpelier avenues.
FOX 29 News went to Wyatt's Norristown home to try and get comment, but no one answered at the door.
Wyatt issued the following statement later on Monday: "I apologize to my
family, teammates, coaches and Temple
University for the
embarrassment that I have caused. I was in Atlantic City this past weekend celebrating
my 21st birthday with friends and exercised very poor judgment by allowing
myself and my friends to be put in a compromising situation. I intend to cooperate
with the authorities during their investigation and the legal process."
Larry Dougherty, Temple University's senior associate athletic director for communications, said Monday, "We have just become
aware of the charges and are still gathering information at this point."
Police said in a news release that they "will continue with these types of undercover operations to combat the prostitution problem in Atlantic City."
