Suspect in motorcycle hit-and-run that injured boy, 4, arrested

Posted: Updated:

Police say a 25-year-old St. Paul man has been arrested in connection with the hit-and-run motorcycle crash that critically injured a 4-year-old boy while he was holding his mother's hand.

Police arrested Ernest Travis Jonas in a Shakopee hotel room at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday. He was taken into custody without incident.

The crash took place shortly before 1 p.m. on Saturday on Lafond Avenue. Witnesses said the motorcycle rider had been driving aggressively -- and often did in the area, even popping wheelies -- prior to the crash.

Officers have also recovered the bike involved in the crash, which was found in a garage on Edmund Street in St. Paul.

Paramedics took the boy, Tyrell Baymon, to Regions Hospital, but he has since been transferred to Gillette Children's Specialty Healthcare, where he is listed in critical condition.

Baymon's mother told FOX 9 News he has a fractured skull, and has not regained consciousness since the crash. The family said an MRI was scheduled for Sunday afternoon.

Prior to the crash, the boy was holding his mother's hand. "Next thing I know, he's flying through the air -- I'm running -- chasing after him and he's under a car," said his mother, Marcia Scroggins. "I pulled him up, grabbed him, sat down with him, holding him, telling him, "Talk to me!  Say something to me!  Look at me!  Breathe!"

The family had been heading to Como Park to hold a birthday party for Baymon. The cake was still in the SUV when he was struck."Thank you to everyone who has been praying for my son and to the police who have been working on this case," said Scroggins in a statement Sunday night.

Police said tips from the community helped them make an arrest quickly, and the case will likely be presented to the Ramsey County Attorney's Office in the coming days for formal charges.

Jonas has a history of driving violations that spans multiple counties -- including Dakota, Goodhue, Ramsey and Hennepin, with multiple violations in the past six months. His most recent occurred last month in St. Paul after he was arrested on a charge of driving after a license cancellation.

In November, Jonas was arrested in New Brighton by the State Patrol. In that case, he was charged with driving after revocation and providing false information, according to Ramsey County bookings. In December, Hennepin County also charged him with presenting a canceled, revoked or suspended license as a valid license.

Prior to those stops, Jonas was cited four times in 2011 for exceeding the speed limit.

Ramsey County had also charged Jonas with possession of drug paraphernalia, but that charge was later dismissed along with the charge of driving after revocation following a guilty plea to making false statements about his license. He spent 30 days in jail and was also placed on a year of probation in February.
