Rockville HS student finds unique way to land her prom date

ROCKVILLE, Md. -

Chloe Thomas is very busy these days, picking out her prom shoes, accessories, and scheduling beauty appointments before the big day.

But getting to this point was a bit of a journey, according to her mother Laura Thomas.

"Chloe had asked three or more boys from her special needs class to go and they had backed out for one reason or another," said Laura.

Chloe all but given up on prom when she decided to ask Joseph Broussard, a popular boy from her health class.

"Well he's taken, so I can't say he's cute, but he's funny. He has a great sense of humor," said Chloe. "He was making jokes and everything, so I thought he could go with me or something.

Too embarrassed to ask him face-to-face, she wanted her proposal videotaped and played on the school's morning newscast.

"I tried to discourage her," said Chloe's mother. "I was afraid if she asked this kid that I didn't know, she would be hurt and disappointed and embarrassed. But she said, ‘Mom, I thought you'd be proud of me for being brave to do that.'"

We quickly learned what Chloe's mom, friends and teachers have known a long time: Chloe has guts.

"When I saw [the proposal], when the whole school saw that, in the hallway, I was getting [other kids saying] ‘Say yes! Say yes! Say yes! What are you going to do? What are you going to say?'" Broussard said.

The next day, he went on the school's morning newscast and said, "Chloe, thank you very much for inviting me to prom and I would love to go with you."

"When I said yes on the morning announcement, she wasn't in school, so I was little broken-hearted when I came up second period and she wasn't there," said Broussard.

Chloe happened to be home sick that day, but her mom got a call from the school with the news.

"Who knew that kids in this day and age think and feel like that," said Laura. "It's been a pretty amazing ride and we feel really blessed."

Now, Chloe is focused on her dress.

"It's light blue, it's like in the movie ‘Cinderella' when she meets her prince," said Chloe.

Chloe also showed us her dance.

"You put your hands up and you go like this," she said, pumping her arms and fists up and down. "It gets everyone started. Woo hoo!"

Meantime, Chloe has one more video message for Joseph.

"Thank you for choosing to go with me," she said. "I know it took a lot of nerves, but I just want to say you're going to look good on that night."

"Thank you very much for inviting me to prom," said Joseph. "I can't wait to go with you. It's going to be an amazing day and hopefully we can have a lot of fun."

"It is going to be the best party ever!" said Chloe.
